Richard Avedon
1923–2004 · United StatesThis work is from Avedon's American West series, where the market has been exceptionally strong. Most recently, "Juan Patricio Lobato, Rocky Ford, Colorado, 8/23/80" from the same series sold at Sotheby's Contemporary Day Auction on November 19, 2025 for $609,600 (estimate $200,000-300,000). That work and this one share identical specifications: same series, same dimensions (56¼ x 45 inches), same medium (gelatin silver print mounted to aluminum), same printing year (1985), same edition size (6). Both represent Avedon's magnum opus documenting the American West from 1979-1984, however this is a stronger and more important work in the series.
